TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Eight Taiwan universities made it onto this year's Times Higher Education Young University Rankings, but their relative positions fell.

Taiwan placing eight higher education institutions on the list marks the highest number that the nation has ever had.

National Taiwan University of Science and Technology (Taiwan Tech) performed the best among Taiwanese schools on the list, ranking at No. 59, though it slid from last year's No. 43.

Other schools include Chang Gung University, National Sun Yat-Sen University and National Yang-Ming University in the 101-150 range.

Asia University, Feng Chia University, National Chung Cheng University and Yuan Ze University were in the 151-200 ranking range.

Phil Baty, editor of the rankings report, said this year's findings indicated well-performing schools were located in all parts of the world, according to the Central News Agency.

While he acknowledged U.S. schools performed well on the list, Baty pointed out that they only made up 3 percent of overall schools.

Schools in Asia performed particularly well, with half of them listed in the top 10, Baty said, making it their best performance since the list was first launched in 2012.

"Out of the 200 schools overall, 55 schools on the list are from 18 Asian countries."

The Young University Ranking lists schools that are aged 50 years or under in 48 different countries. This year, they expanded the number of schools included on the ranking to 200, up from 150 in 2016 and 100 before that.
